"My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
~ Forrest Gump

Every once in a while this quote comes to mind, as it does now while I reflect with gratitude on life's kinder, sweeter side...

Thomas Schmitz of Ischebeck Can Ltd.

Back in 2016, Thomas Schmitz, VP of Ischebeck Can Ltd. hired me to help strengthen their website presence.

It was imperative that the site not only showcase their products, but also translate their vision of humble competence, quality and integrity.

Through our collaboration, we successfully accomplished these objectives, and what followed was a mutually respectful business relationship.

Last fall, Thomas and I decided to meet for coffee, catch-up on business, and discuss what we could do next to increase Ischebeck Can's online presence.

Concentrating on the art and science of website development - and not being proficient enough to offer any type of marketing as a service - I thought it best to refer Thomas to social media strategist, author and speaker Jonathan Christian, founder of We Make Stuff Happen.

I met Jonathan at a small business networking event years ago, and was impressed not only with his knowledge of social media, but also with something else. In the 30 or so minutes that Jonathan shared on how to leverage Google and Google Business, it became apparent that the source of his passion was in helping people - full stop.

When you see that quality in someone, the impression sticks.

A few weeks back I wrote an article on AWStats - a website activity tracking tool found on cPanel - offered by many hosting companies.

Today I'm going to help you make sense of your site's valuable statistics.

When you arrive at your AWSTats page you will see at the very top:

Last Update: the date & time your statistics were last updated, as well as the report period.

Reported period: is great if your site's been online for a while because you can compare your statistics from one month/year to another. Simply select your month from the drop-down menu to view previous months and click the OK button.  If you've been online for years, you can also select your year in additions to your month.

Clients often ask me about being able to see their website activity. For example, they want to see how busy their site is, which pages are most popular, the sites directing traffic to their website, and where their visitors are coming from, as well as keywords and keyphrases used by search engines.

Google Anaytics is one of the most popular and comprehensive website visitor tracking software services out there, but can be a bit intimidating for newbies.

I do recommend adding Google Analytics to your website, however, if your hosting company offers cPanel Software with your website hosting package, there is an easier to understand alternative that you may appreciate - at least until you get your PHD in Google Analytics.

This wonderful website tracking tool is call AWStats - Advanced Web Statistics.

AWStats is a logging tool that generates ample website statistics, and presents them through a very user-friendly graphical interface.

Networking at its finest

Networking is a proven and effective means to promote your business, product, and/or service.

It is no longer what you know that can advance your career, but who you know and who knows you.

This leads us to reason that the more people you know, the better the chances of finding that ideal employee, landing that perfect job, selling your product/services and growing your business.

Have you ever heard of the Small World Phenomenon? The small world phenomenon theory is that everyone in the world can be reached through a short chain of social acquaintances. The concept gave rise to the famous phrase Six Degrees of Separation.

Whether or not these two theories are accurate is debatable. There is however one fundamental truth to these theories, that by increasing the number of people you know, your circle of contacts and resources compound exponentially.
